ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To study the incidence of spontaneous abortion and relationship between incidence and maternal age profession, education level and income. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University, Bangkok 10400, Thailand. SUBJECTS: 999 patients registered at antenatal care unit, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from July 1, 1992. MAIN OUTCOME: Number of spontaneous abortion measures. RESULTS: From 999 patients, 69 were excluded from the study (8 had induced abortion, 61 could not be contacted). Most of patients aged 20-34 (85.5%) with the mean of 27 years. Spontaneous abortion occurred in 64 patients, incidence of 6.9 per cent. The analysis of data showed no relationship between the incidence of spontaneous abortion and age, profession, education level and income. CONCLUSION: Compared with previous studies, the incidence of spontaneous abortion is this study was quite low. With regard to the relationship of socioeconomic, further study with larger population should be performed to draw suitable conclusion.

ABSTRACT

Current evidence suggests that there is a change of attitude towards more permissive sex among the young and educated people in Thailand compared to other oriental countries. This study aimed to find the frequency of coitus, oral-genital sex and anal intercourse among new female patients who attended the sexual health clinic, Ramathibodi Hospital in 1990. The gynecologist in charge interviewed the patients using a questionnaire. The total number of participants was 408. Coital frequency ranged from < 1 to 7 times per week with 1, 2, 3 as the first three leading rate. There were 107 women (26.2%) and 150 men (36.8%) who had experienced fellatio and cunnilingus, respectively. Only 5.6 per cent had anal intercourse. These findings add more knowledge about the sexual behavior among Thais and that a certain group of people are not strictly conservative in their attitude towards sex and that males are more permissive than females.

ABSTRACT

In obstetrics, the need to perform manual removal of placenta is not infrequent. This was a retrospective study of placental removal among all vaginal deliveries at Ramathibodi Hospital from 1985 to 1988. The incidence of manual removal of placenta was 2.1 per 100 parturients which was higher than other reports. The reason for this is still unclear. The patients' age was mostly 26-30 years with multiparity accounting for 73.1 per cent and most deliveries occurred between 38-40 weeks of gestational age. The indication for manual removal of placenta was mostly placental retention. Previous history of curettage in the last gravida accounted for 34.7 per cent of cases. In two cases (0.5%), the procedure failed due to placenta accreta and hysterectomy was required.

ABSTRACT

Sexual outlet of the homosexuals was rarely studied, any information obtained could give more understanding about their sexual development. This study aimed at exploring some sexual outlets among homosexually oriented medical students at Ramathibodi Hospital compared with the heterosexuals. Ninety per cent of male students and 85.71 per cent of female students voluntarily answered the questionnaires during the academic year 1982-1988. No difference was observed in the proportion of homosexuals and heterosexuals of both sexes. Most of the homosexuals were bisexual with predominant heterosexual feelings. Homosexual males performed similar sexual activities as heterosexuals. However, more homosexual males engaged in homosexual contact than heterosexual males while the proportion of engagement in heterosexual intercourse did not differ between these two groups. Among the females, solitary sexual activity occurred in the same proportion between both groups. These findings indicated the similarity in sexual development among the homosexuals and the heterosexuals of each sex but there was a certain difference in learning experience.

ABSTRACT

Obesity increased complications during the antenatal period, labour and delivery as well as puerperium. This study aimed to investigate the complications during labour and delivery among obese primiparous and obese multiparous parturients. Body weight of the mothers greater than or equal to 80 kg at the time of admission for delivery was the criterion of obesity in this study. Retrospective case control study was used. The study and the control group consisted of 741 parturients who delivered during the 3 year period, 1986-1988. There were significant increases in the incidence of antenatal complications especially hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, obstructed labour, primary cesarean delivery, and macrosomic infant among both the obese primipara and obese multipara.

All males had had ejaculation. Eighty-four per cent of the males and 28.1 per cent of the females experienced nocturnal sex dreams. Ninety-eight per cent of the males and 47.8 per cent of the females masturbated. Most of the first events occurred incidentally among both sexes. Sixty-one per cent of the males and 1.5 per cent of the females had engaged in sexual intercourse. Most of the males had their first coital experience with prostitutes.
